L'art du XXe siècle mérite une fois de plus qu'un nouvel ouvrage lui soit consacré. On a tant créé durant ces cent années, tant inventé, tant bouleversé mais aussi tant suscité de débats, de malentendus, d'incompréhension, de polémiques, qu'il est bon de revenir sur les réalisations de ce siècle dans le domaine artistique, l'Histoire ayant fait largement son office. Il reste nécessaire de mieux connaître l'art moderne et contemporain afin d'essayer de mieux le comprendre. La meilleure manière pour y parvenir consiste à dégager les grandes tendances qui le parcourent, qui s'opposent, qui se complètent, qui se recoupent puis se transforment d'une époque à l'autre et à mettre ensuite en valeur le rôle des principaux créateurs du siècle - Picasso, Matisse, Léger, Mondrian, Malevitch, De Chirico, Pollock, Warhol...
